Introduction
One of the most common questions we are asked as an NPORS Accredited Training Provider (ATP) is:
“How do I get the CSCS logo on my NPORS card?”
We deliver NPORS training and testing across most of the UK, and although we are based in the North East of England, the rules around NPORS and CSCS apply nationwide.
This guide explains how the NPORS card system works, the difference between traditional NPORS cards and NPORS CSCS cards, and what is required to have the CSCS logo displayed on your card.
How NPORS Training and Testing Works
NPORS training and testing is carried out in line with published course objectives and learning outcomes, which are derived from the National Occupational Standards (NOS).
As an NPORS Accredited Training Provider (ATP), we can assist with a pre-assessment of the operator to determine the level of training required before testing takes place.
Upon the successful completion of NPORS training and testing, the operator will obtain one of the NPORS registrations explained below.
Fast Card Turnaround
The NPORS registration system is designed to allow operators to transition on to site quickly.
In most cases, NPORS cards can be turned around within 24 hours, helping operators gain access to job sites without unnecessary delays.
Understanding NPORS Card Routes
There are two main NPORS card routes:
-NPORS Traditional Card
-NPORS CSCS Card
Choosing the correct route is essential if you need the CSCS logo.
NPORS Traditional Card (No CSCS Logo)
The NPORS Traditional card is designed for operators who work in industry sectors other than construction and are therefore not required to hold a card bearing the CSCS logo.
Important points:
-Does not display the CSCS logo
-Suitable for non-construction sectors
-Standards and assessment methods are exactly the same as the NPORS CSCS route
-Available as a 3-year or 5-year registration, depending on sector or in-company requirements
The absence of the CSCS logo does not reflect a lower standard. It simply reflects that non-construction sectors do not have the same CSCS requirements as construction.

For Construction: The NPORS CSCS Card Route
For those operating within the construction sector, the NPORS CSCS card route must be followed.
The NPORS CSCS card:
-Is issued in line with the requirements set out by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC)
-Displays the CSCS logo
-Is widely recognised and accepted on UK construction sites
To obtain an NPORS CSCS card, the operator must:
-Pass the relevant NPORS plant category training and testing with a registered NPORS Instructor
-Provide proof of a valid Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touchscreen test taken within the required timeframe
Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Touchscreen Test Rules
This is one of the most misunderstood parts of the process.
-The HS&E touchscreen test is valid for 5 years
-However, to obtain an NPORS CSCS card, the test must have been completed within the last 2 years at the point of application
-The test must be visible on the CSCS Card Checker
Even if the test is still valid, it will not be accepted for CSCS logo purposes if it was taken more than two years ago.
Types of NPORS CSCS Cards
There are two types of NPORS CSCS cards, depending on competence status.
NPORS Trained Operator Card (Red)
The NPORS Trained Operator card is issued to operators who do not yet hold the requisite (S)NVQ.
Key points:
-Displays the CSCS logo
-Valid for 2 years
-Allows operators to work on site while progressing towards competence
-During this period, the operator must register for and achieve the relevant (S)NVQ
This card is intended as a temporary route, not a long-term solution.

NPORS Competent Operator Card (Blue)
The NPORS Competent Operator card is issued to operators who hold the requisite (S)NVQ.
Key points:
-Displays the CSCS logo
-Valid for 5 years
-Confirms full occupational competence
-Includes a CPD record / operator logbook
This is the highest level NPORS card and is widely accepted across the construction industry.

Summary: Getting the CSCS Logo on Your NPORS Card
In simple terms:
-If you work outside construction, the NPORS Traditional card may be suitable and does not carry a CSCS logo
-If you work in construction, you must follow the NPORS CSCS route
-A valid HS&E test completed within the last 2 years is essential
-Red cards are issued without an NVQ and last up to 2 years
-Blue cards require the relevant NVQ and last 5 years
Final Thoughts
As an NPORS training provider, most issues we see come from choosing the wrong card route or misunderstanding the HS&E test timeframe.
Understanding the difference between traditional NPORS cards and NPORS CSCS cards ensures you apply correctly the first time and avoid delays getting on site.
